Shingrix Vaccine
Shingles (herpes zoster) vaccine

15th May 2024

On 1st November 2023 the shingles vaccine (Shingrix) became available under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for eligible patients. The NIP supplies practices with vaccines under the schedule and coordinates deliveries based on state availability. Due to the popularity of the Shingrix vaccine since it was added to the program on 1st November 2023, stock has been limited and unfortunately unpredictable. We are currently managing our bookings with our deliveries and are prioritising patients who are immunocompromised and patients due for their second dose of the Shingrix Vaccine. Please see below for further information.

Immunocompromised Patients:

For patients that are immunocompromised please phone us to enquire about scheduling an appointment.

Patients due for their second dose:

If you have already had one dose of the Shingrix vaccine administered at our practice, and it has been at least 3 months since your first dose (unless advised otherwise by your GP), please call the practice to enquire about bookings and availability. We will begin booking patients due for the second dose from mid-March however we are limited to a small number of bookings per fortnight due to the limited stock supplied by SA Health. The recommended interval between your first and second dose is 2-6 months.

Patients enquiring about their first dose:

We are expecting a delivery of vaccines in late May/early June which will allow us to begin vaccinating patients for their first dose. However, we continue to receive limited stock from SA Health which means we are limited to around 25 patients a fortnight. Due to the demand for first dose vaccines please be aware that we may not be able to offer appointments to patients and we may ask you to enquire with us in the coming months instead. We apologise for any inconvenience and understand this may be frustrating for some of our patients. If we receive any further updates from SA Health, or our stock changes, we will update this page.

If you are interested in purchasing the Shingrix vaccine privately, rather than receiving it for free under the National Immunisation Program, please speak with your GP about getting a prescription. The Shingrix vaccine can be purchased on prescription from a pharmacy and our nursing team are able to administer the vaccine for you. Please note the Shingrix vaccine costs approximately $550 for two doses when purchased privately on prescription.

We will continue to update this page as we receive further information. Our friendly reception staff are also able to advise you of any updates or changes to our stock.
