IUDs are small flexible devices that offer highly effective, reversible, long term contraception. IUDs are effective for 5-10 years depending on the device. They are more cost effective than other forms of contraception and are over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy. They are readily reversible with return to underlying fertility when removed and have no ongoing effect on your fertility. IUDs are suitable for women of all ages (regardless of any previous pregnancy) including during breastfeeding. They act by affecting sperm movement and survival in the uterus and fallopian tubes. They may also affect ovulation by changing the hormones that cause an egg to be released each month.

Appointments

Initial Appointment:

You will need an initial consult with one of our doctors who perform IUD insertions (list on next page). This will include doing a cervical screening and swabs if required. A longer consultation is required. The doctor will issue the prescription for the IUD at this consult and book in your procedure.

Procedure Appointment:

Your procedure will be booked with the doctor and our practice nurse and the appointment will take approximately 40 minutes. Most women tolerate the insertion of their IUD well, however we understand this can be a painful procedure. At your initial consult your doctor will speak to you about appropriate pain relief which is catered to your specific needs. This may include tablet pain relief, the green whistle and/or heat packs.

Post IUD Check-Up Appointment:

A check-up appointment is required 6 weeks after the insertion of your IUD. This is usually a standard consultation.
